INTERIM COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
KNIFE, GENERAL SURGICAL (Disposable)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Interim Commercial Item Description which was developed by the Defense Personnel Support Center, Directorate of Medical Materiel, DPSC-RST, 2800 South 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19101, based upon currently available technical information.
This interim commercial item description covers two general surgical knives.
Type I shall have a blade of commercial designation number 10.
Type II shall have a blade of commercial designation number 20.
Salient characteristics:
General. The knife shall have a stainless blade with protective guard, plastic handle, be sterile and disposable and suitable for routine surgical use.
Material. The blade shall be fabricated of a suitable martensitic corrosion-resistant steel, type 440 or similar, in accordance with ASTM F899.
The handle shall be fabricated of a rigid plastic, such as Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) or similar, that will not bend or break during use.
Hardness. After the blade is properly hardened, and tempered, the Rockwell hardness of the finished blade shall be C50 to C57 when tested according to the blade hardness test.
Finish. The blade cutting edge shall be uniform, well defined and sharp. All edges of the blade shall be smooth and free of any nicks, burrs, jags, pits, grind marks, signs of corrosions, or any other defects.
The handle shall ‘have a smooth finish except for the gripping area, which shall be serrated or textured.
