COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CATHETER AND NEEDLE UNIT, INTRAVENOUS,
24 Gauge Catheter, Radiopaque, Disposable, 50s
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a catheter-over-needle unit suitable for administering intravenous medication from a single venipuncture in preoperative and post-operative treatment.
Salient characteristics:
The catheter-needle unit consists of a sterile, 24 gage by 3/4 inch catheter and a non-coring, 3/4 inch (1.9 cm) needle.
The catheter shall be made of fluoroplastic or polypropylene, be radiopaque, and have a plastic hub with a taper and locking flange which shall comply with ANSI/HIMA Standard MD70.1, Luer Taper Fittings for Medical Materiel.
The needle shall be made of AISI Type 304 stainless steel and include a self-venting chamber. The hub of the needle shall also comply with MD70.1.
The catheter bevel shall be very thin to minimize patient trauma. The catheter shall be in compliance with USP Class IV plastics requirements.
The catheter shall not exhibit leakage exceeding one clinging drop in the hydraulic test or one clinging bubble when immersed in water in the pneumatic test using appropriate fixtures and Luer taper gages.
Hydraulic – 20 psig water pressure, 2 minutes
Pneumatic – 10 psig air pressure, 1 minute
The exterior of the needle shall be lubricated with an inert, non-toxic silicone compound suitable for intravenous use. The needle and catheter shall be free from chips and other foreign matter.
Sterility of the catheter and needle unit shall be in accordance with the following sterility requirements:
A. Sterility test
The catheter and needle unit shall be tested for sterility in accordance with the method specified in the USP using inoculated product, inoculated simulated product, or paper spore strip (carrier). Product containing a biological indicator shall be marked or labeled so that it clearly
