COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BLOOD PLATELET ADMINISTRATION-POOLING SET
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers an administration or pooling “Y” set for transfusing blood platelet.
Salient characteristics:
General. Shall be a sterile, disposable administration or pooling “Y” set for transfusing blood platelets. The administration-pooling set shall consist of a “Y” plastic tubing assembly composed of plastic tubing, fittings and various components. The set shall be assembled as shown on Figure 1.
Materials. The tubing shall be fabricated from polyvinyl chloride. The connecting spike shall be fabricated of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer. The “Y” connector shall be fabricated of polyvinylchloride. The male and female Luer lock adapters, female Luer lock cover and needle adapter protected shall be fabricated of a suitable plastic.
Style and design. The tubing shall have a normal ID of 0.125 inches with a nominal wall of 0.032 inches. Snore A durometer shall be 80 ± () as measured by ASTM D-2440, 10 seconds at 23oC.
The connecting spike piercing tip shaft effective length above protector seat shall not be greater than 1.05 inch to protect from piercing bag sidewall during use. Base diameter should provide tight leakproof seal with blood bag entry port diameter of 0.220 ± .002 inch. Taper from cone tip to shaft transition to base should be smooth with no steps. The piercing tip shall have a conical design with three equally spaced (120o) slots to assure no blockage under suction. Smoothly rounded finger wings shall be provided for easy insertion or removal of the spike into or from the blood bag. The tubing connector shall have internal tubing connection to provide the most open lumen. Length of connection below the wings shall be long enough to provide adequate finger grip of 0.75 inches. A protector seat with a diameter greater than the base of the functional shaft shall be provided between the base of the shaft and finger wings.
The luer taper and Luer locking engagement of the male and female Luer lock adapters shall meet the requirements of ANSI/HIMA MD70.1.
The “Y” connector shall have smooth, internal surfaces to minimize turbulence and flow resistance.
The filter screen shall fit tightly in the tubing and shall be composed of polyester monofilament with square weave of 200 mesh per inch, equivalent to 74 microns (± 10%) opening size. The effective filter shall be 3 square millimeters.
