COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
TUBE, DRAINAGE, SURGICAL (Penrose)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a Penrose drainage tube.
Salient characteristics:
General. Except as specified below, the Penrose drainage tube shall comply with all requirements of ASTM D3579.
Specific requirements/exceptions:
Pyrogenocity. In addition to the requirements of ASTM D3597, the drainage tube shall be non-pyrogenic when tested as specified in the latest edition of the USP (United States Pharmacopeia).
X-ray opacity. The drainage tube shall have a minimum relative attenuation coefficient of 95 percent when tested as specified in ASTM F640, Method C.
Dimensions. The dimensions of the Penrose drainage tube shall be 18 ± 0.394 inches long, 1 ± 0.039 inches inner diameter, and 0.009 inch minimum wall thickness.
Finish. The drainage tube shall have a smooth, uniform finish overall.
Workmanship. The drainage tube shall be free from holes, cuts, tears, slits, internal or external tackiness, brittleness, blisters, lumps, foreign matter, and any other defects that detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
Unit. Package (PG). One package containing ten drainage tubes, each tube individually packaged sterile in a peel-open type container capable of maintaining sterility of contents unless package is damaged or opened, as specified, constitutes one unit.
