COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
INTRAVENOUS INJECTION SET, With Flexible Drip Chamber,
Non-Vented, Adult, without Needle, Disposable, 50’s
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a single type of non-vented intravenous injection set used in administering parenteral solutions from glass containers with airways or flexible bags.
Salient characteristics:
Material. the tubing shall be clear, plasticized polyvinyl chloride having a Shore Durometer A hardness of 78 ± 5. Rubber at injection sites shall be of the best quality and suitable in all respects for injection and resealing after needle withdrawal. The clear polyvinyl chloride sidewall of the drip chamber shall have a Shore Durometer A hardness of 96 ± 5, -10. All plastic and rubber components shall be sterile, pyrogen-free and, if required, to be in contact with the parenteral fluid, in compliance with the USP requirements for Class IV plastics. The spike and cap of the drip chamber, the roller clamp, the Y’s, and male Luer taper shall be made of suitable rigid plastic.
Construction. The set shall be non-vented and include a spike, flexible drip chamber calibrated at 15 ± 3 drops/ml, a check valve, two Y-injection sites, a roller clamp to provide a constant flow setting and stoppage, a flash tube and male slip fit Luer taper complying with ANSI/HIMA MD 70.1. The overall length of the set shall be 90 ± 5 inches (229 ± 13 cm). The drip chamber wall shall be 0.019 to 0.030 inch thick, have an ID of 0.460 to 0.490 inch, and be about 2-3/4 inches high. The check valve shall be about 14 inches below the drip chamber, the upper Y injection site shall be about 20 inches below the drip chamber, the lower Y injection site shall be about 8 inches from the Luer tip, and the roller clamp shall be between the two Y injection sites. The tubing shall have a 0.019 to 0.025 inch wall and be 0.106 ± .005 inch in ID. All fittings shall be permanently attached and leakproof.
