The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a sterile, disposable, plastic syringe used to irrigate the eye, ear and ulcers.
Salient characteristics.
General. The Syringe shall be a sterile, disposable syringe used in irrigation of the eyes, ears and ulcers.
Material. The syringe shall be manufactured entirely from flexible polyvinyl chloride. The syringe shall meet the requirements for Class II plastics as stated in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP).
Characteristics. The syringe shall have a nominal capacity of 3 ounces. The syringes shall have a tapered tip. The syringe shall have molded rings designed to provide a secure grip. The syringe tip shall have a length of 2-1/2 + 1/2 or -1/8 inches. The tapered tip shall be free from any restrictions or occlusions. The syringe shall create a vacuum of 76 mm Hg (minimum).
Hardness. The syringe shall have a Shore durometer hardness of 55-63A when tested in accordance with ASTM D2240. Using ASTM D2240, the gauge reading shall be made 10 seconds after application of the instrument.
