SUPPORT, KNEE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to A-A-0051528(DM), dated 27 June 1986.
This commercial item description covers two (2) sizes of a one-way stretch elastic, hinged knee support to provide stability to the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the injured or diseased knee.
Salient characteristics:
The knee supports shall be of the following sizes and circumference:
Size 1- Medium- 13 to 14-3/4 inches (32.5 to 37.5 cm).
Size 2- Large- 14-3/4 to 16-1/2 inches (37.5 to 41.9 cm)
The knee supports shall be fabricated of a surgical weight, one-way stretch elastic that provides circular compression to help reduce swelling. The fabric shall be knitted of 36 ga. cotton covered rubber yarn. A 50/2 mercerized cotton yarn and a 100/1 denier texturized polyester yarn shall be used to hold the covered rubber yarn in position. The edges of the fabric shall not fray or roll.
The knee supports shall have two hinged metal bars encased in leather casings on each side of the support. The casings shall be a good grade of chrome tanned leather. The hinges shall be longer on one side of the pivot joint for better stability. The hinges shall be fabricated of nickel plated brass that has been properly hardened and passivated. The hinged bars shall have a graphite washer for easy movement of the hinge.
The knee supports shall have leather strap with a buckle at the top and bottom to help hinge stabilization.
Workmanship. The knee supports shall be free from defects which detract from their appearance or impair their serviceability.
