SUTURE, ABSORBABLE, SURGICAL
(Glycolide-Lactide Copolymer)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers absorbable surgical sutures fabricated of glycolide-lactide copolymer. Sutures shall also have a coating of a mixture of 50 percent glycolide-lactide copolymer and 50 percent calcium stearate. Sutures shall be dyed viclet and meet the requirements of the USP for extractable color. Sutures which are armed shall be swaged to eyeless needles and meet the requirements of the USP for security of needle attachment. Suture tensile strength shall also be in accordance with the USP.
Needles shall be fabricated from type 420 or 440 corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with ASTM F899. Needles shall be properly stress-relieved and passivated. Needles shall meet the requirements of ASTM E290 for ductility.
Sutures and needles shall have dimensions as specified in Table I.
