COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
STETHOSCOPE, ESOPHAGEAL (Disposable)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers requirements for esophageal stethoscopes suitable for monitoring heart, chest and breath sounds of patients undergoing surgery.
Salient characteristics.
Material and construction. Stethoscope shall consist of a single lumen tube with a nominal length of 19 inches. The distal end of the stethoscope shall have an eye opening. The stethoscope shall have additional staggered side eyes around the circumference of the distal end. All eyes shall be protected from secretions by a thin overlying cuff sensitive enough to permit transmission of sound through the tube.
The tube and the cuff shall be made of pliant polyvinylchloride suitable for the purpose of sound transmission. The cuff and the tube shall be smooth and free of any surface defects to permit easy passage of the tube and minimize irritation to mucus membranes. The tube shall not kink or collapse during insertion.
The proximal end of the tube shall be securely fitted with a male Luer slip connector for attachment to a stethoscope or monitor readout. The connector shall be fabricated of polypropylene or other plastic suitable for the purpose intended. The connector shall conform to the requirements of ANSI/HIMA MD70.1.
The stethoscope shall be sterile and meet the requirements of the USP for Class II plastic. The sterility requirements shall be tested in accordance with the USP.
