The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers the requirements for maximum self-registering, mercury-in-glass reusable thermometers suitable for body temperature measurements in humans.
Salient characteristics:
Scope: Thermometer covered by this document shall be of the following types and styles:
Type I – Oral
Type II – Rectal
Style 1 – with case
Style 2 – without case
Requirements. The thermometer shall be of either oral or rectal type with a stubby bulb design, as specified, suitable for human body temperature measurements in Fahrenheit scale. The stem shall be triangular in cross section with magnifying lens at the junction of two sides with the numerals and graduations placed on the sides adjacent to the magnifying lens.
Except otherwise provided in this document, the thermometer shall conform to all applicable requirements of ASTM E667 for Clinical Thermometers (Maximum self-registering , mercury-in-glass).
In addition to the requirements of the ASTM Standard, the following shall apply.
Stem. The stem shall be of lens front thermometer tubing having white enameled backing. Thermometer intended for oral use shall be identified by a distinct blue glass bead fused to the top of the stem. Thermometer intended for rectal use shall be identified by a distinct red glass bead fused to the top of the stem.
