COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CATHETER AND NEEDLE UNIT, INTRAVENOUS,
(18 Gage Catheter)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a catheter placement unit. The catheter shall be suitable for administering intravenous medication from a single venipuncture in preparation and post operative treatment.
Salient characteristic:
The catheter needle unit shall be a sterile, radiopaque, fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer catheter suitable of intravenous therapy. The catheter shall be 18 gage by 1-1/4 inches (3.2 cm).
The catheter and all other plastic parts in the fluid path shall comply with USP Class IV plastic requirements. The needle cannula shall be type 304 stainless steel in accordance with ASTM F899.
The catheter shall have a permanently attached Luer hub complying with ANSI/HIMA MD70.1. The needle shall have a clear, permanently attached hub with a male tip over which the catheter hub fits. The Luer tips shall be in accordance with ANSI/HIMA MD70.1. The hub, integral with Luer taper tip, constitutes a flash chamber and shall be fitted with a vented plug.
The catheter shall make a precision fit with the needle. The heel of the needle shall extend beyond the catheter. The catheter tip shall be tapered and designed to minimize patient trauma. The needle shall have a short bevel, dull heel to prevent coring and be precision ground for sharpness and freedom from burrs.
The catheter needle unit shall be provided with a protector that covers the entire catheter and needle point.
