COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
INTRAVENOUS INJECTION SET,
(With Flexible Drip Chamber, Non-vented, Adult, Without Needle, Disposable)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a single type of non-vented intravenous injection set used in administering parenteral solutions from glass containers with airways or flexible bags.
Salient characteristics:
Materials. Rubber injection sites shall be of the best quality and suitable in all respects for injection and resealing after needle withdrawal. The tubing shall be clear, plasticized polyvinyl chloride with a Shore Durometer A hardness of 78 ± 5. The drip chamber shall be clear and flexible polyvinyl chloride with a Shore Durometer A hardness of 96 + 5, -10. All plastic and rubber components shall be sterile, pyrogen-free and, if in contact with the parenteral solution, shall be in compliance with USP Class IV plastic requirements. The spike and cap of the drip chamber, the roller clamp, the Y injection site, male Luer taper and end protectors shall be made of suitable rigid plastic.
Construction. The set shall be made without an air vent and include a spike, flexible drip chamber, a Y injection site, flash tube, needle adapter, roller clamp, tubing and end protectors. The overall length shall be 74 inches + 3 inches, - 1 inch. The Y injection site shall be six inches from the flash tube. The tubing shall have an inside diameter of 0.106 ± .005 inch and an outside diameter of 0.150 ± .005 inch.
The spike measured from the tip to the shoulder shall be 0.908 inch + .03 inch and have a diameter of 0.210 + .005 inch below the tip and at the level just above the shoulder 0.215 ± .005 inch. The spike shall be made with a sharp point and withstand penetration through rubber or plastic stoppers of parenteral solution containers without damage. The drip chamber shall have a volume of 6 ml + 1 ml. The drip orifice shall be calibrated to 15 ± 3 drops/ml. The adapter for the needle attachment shall be a slip fit Luer taper complying with ANSI/HIMA MD70.1. The complete set shall withstand a 20 psig water pressure for three minutes without demonstrating leakage-of-more than one falling drop.
