COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
DIAPHRAGM, VAGINAL (Arcing)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-D-36691 which is cancelled.
This commercial item description covers five sizes of arcing vaginal diaphragms.
Salient characteristics:
Classification. Diaphragms shall be of the following types:
Type I – Compressible at any point along the rim
Type II – Compressible at two marked pressure points on the rim.
General. The diaphragm shall meet the requirements of ASTM D3899 for Type 3 diaphragms. The diaphragm shall be an arcing type, and shall be in accordance with Figure 1. Correct diaphragm placement shall be achieved without an inserter.
The diaphragm spring shall be manufactured in such a manner as to resist distortion, saddling, or permanent deformation when the diaphragm is repeatedly folded and unfolded.
The Type I diaphragm spring shall be a continuous steel coiled spring. The Type II rim or periphery shall contain a conventional steel arcing pegs with an insert. Both Type I and Type II springs shall be completely encapsulated in rubber.
The Type II diaphragm shall have two permanent markings on the rim indicating the pressure points for folding.
