The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers an eye suture forceps suitable for microsurgery.
Salient characteristics.
General. The eye suture forceps shall be suitable for suture tying during ophthalmic microsurgery.
Style and design. The forceps shall be of straight design, have very fine points at the tips, and shall be in accordance with Figure 1.
Material. Forceps shall be fabricated of a martensitic corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with ASTM F899.
Hardness. Forceps shall have a Rockwell hardness of C-40 to C-48 when tested in accordance with ASTM E18, or E92, and E140.
Corrosion resistance. Forceps shall be properly passivated.
Finish. Forceps shall have a mirror or satin finish.
Markings. The forceps shall bear the manufacturer’s name or registered trademark and the word “stainless”. Instruments of foreign manufacture shall bear the name of the country of manufacture.
Workmanship. The forceps shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
