COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
STAPLES, BONE FIXATION
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers serrated bone fixation staples, with spikes, suitable for use in orthopedic surgery.
Salient characteristics:
Style and design. Staples shall be in accordance with Figure 1.
The staples shall be U-shaped bone fixation staples used in orthopedic surgery. The staples shall have two legs, parallel to within + 0.01 inch, each one inch in length. Legs shall have rectangular cross sections and shall have a minimum of five serrations on the outerside of the legs to prevent the staples from backing out of the bone.
Staples shall have spikes on the underside of the bridge between the legs.
Staples shall be compatible with driver-extractor (See Note 2).
Material. Staples shall be fabricated from cobalt-chromiummolybdenum alloy in accordance with ASTM Designation F75.
Marking and surface preparation. Manufacturers name (or trademark), manufacturers catalog number, and size denominations shall be clearly marked on the topside of the staple bridge. Surface preparation and marking shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation F86.
