COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
FORCEPS, EYE, VITREOUS MICROEXTRACTOR (Neubauer)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-F-42042 (DM), which is cancelled.
This commercial item description covers a Neubauer vitreous microextractor forceps suitable for use in ophthalmic surgery.
Salient characteristics:
General. The forceps shall be a vitreous microextractor forceps of the Neubauer design with an overall length of 154 mm, 20 gauge shaft, and squeeze handle.
Material. The tips of the forceps shall be fabricated from Class 4 corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with ASTM Designation F899. The handle of the forceps shall be Class 3 or Class 4 corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with ASTM Designation F899. The protective cap shall be fabricated of a suitable corrosion-resistant material.
Hardness. Tips of forceps shall have a Rockwell Hardness C scale (HRC) of 38 to 45. The hardness shall be tested in accordance with ASTM Designation E18 or ASTM Designations E92 and E140.
Style and design. The style, design and dimensions of the forceps shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 23369. Tips of forceps shall properly mesh when closed.
Finish. The forceps shall have a satin finish.
Resistance to corrosion.
