COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
RETRACTOR, GENERAL OPERATING (Volkmann)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-R-36846 which is cancelled.
This commercial item description covers general operating retractors of the Volkmann design suitable for use in general surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
General. The retractors shall be general operating retractors of the Volkmann design with either 4 blunt (Type I) or 4 sharp prongs (Type II). The retractors shall incorporate a wire frame-style handle and be 8-3/4 inches long.
Material. Material of the retractors shall be Class 4 corrosion resistant steel in accordance with ASTM Designation F899.
Hardness. Retractors shall have a Rockwell Hardness C scale (HRC) of 40 to 47 when tested in accordance with ASTM Designation E18 or E92 whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation E140.
Style, design and dimensions. The retractors shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 2233 for style, design and dimensions.
Finish. Retractors shall have a mirror, satin, or matte finish. The matte finish shall exhibit a uniform nondirectional surface texture equivalent to that produced by lightly blasting the prepared surface fine abrasives under pressured by lightly blasting the prepared surface fine abrasives under pressure.
Passivation. The retractors shall be properly passivated.
