COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
HOLDER, SUTURE NEEDLE (Heaney)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-H-37029, which is cancelled.
This commercial item description covers a curved suture needle holder of the Heaney design suitable for use in surgery.
Salient characteristics:
General. The suture needle holder shall be approximately 8-1/4 inches long with curved, cross-serrated jaws. The definitions applicable to suture needle holders, for the terms specified herein, shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation FF921.
Material. Components parts other than the working portion of the jaws shall be modified either through use of brazed inserts or have been flame-plated to a thickness of 0.004 + 0.001 inc and shall be fabricated from stellite, tungsten carbide or other suitable material.
Hardness. The suture needle holder shall have a Rockwell hardness C scale (HRC) of 40 to 47 except for the working portion of the jaws which have been modified. The working portion of the jaws shall have a Rockwell Hardness A scale (HRA) of 80 minimum. Testing shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation E18 or E92 whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation E 140.
Style, design and dimensions. The suture needle shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 20645 for style, design and dimensions.
Finish. The suture needle holder shall be mirror, satin or matte finish. The matte finish shall exhibit a uniform nondirectional surface texture equivalent to that produced by lightly blasting the prepared surface with fine abrasives under pressure.
