COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
FORCEPS, GAUZE PAD HOLDING (Foerster)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description as a replacement for Federal Specification GG-F-602, which is cancelled.
This commercial item description covers a gauze pad holding forceps of the Foerster design suitable for holding sponges during surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
General. The forceps shall be Type I straight or Type II curved Foerster style gauze pad holding forceps approximately 9-1/2 inches long. The jaws shall have smooth faces with smooth tips and oval fenestrations. The terms unique to this style forceps shall be in accordance with applicable portions of ASTM Designation F921.
Material. Material of the forceps shall be Class 4 corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with ASTM Designation F899.
Hardness. The forceps shall have a Rockwell Hardness C (HRC) of 40 to 47 when tested in accordance with ASTM Designation E18 or E92 whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation E140.
Style, design and dimensions. The forceps shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 20296 for style, design and dimensions.
Finish. The forceps shall have a mirror, satin or matte finish. The matte finish shall exhibit a uniform nondirectional surface texture equivalent to that produced by lightly blasting the prepared surface with fine abrasives under pressure.
Passivation. Forceps shall be properly passivated.
