RETRACTOR, STERNAL, Cooley,
With Wide Concave Blades
This Commercial Item Description covers a sterna retractor of the Cooley design for use during thoracic surgery.
Salient characteristics:
General. Shall be a wide, self retaining sterna retractor for use during thoracic surgery. Shall have two concave blades. The blades shall have round, smooth edges. One concave blade shall be permanently fixed to a shaft which has teeth to accommodate ratchet mechanism of handle. A second concave blade shall be detachable and have a permanently fixed snap-lock handle to engage the ratchet mechanism and ensure proper retraction. Shall have a maximum spread of 6-1/2 inches between blades.
Material. Material of the retractor shall be corrosion-resistant martensitic stainless steel Class 4, Type 420 in accordance with ASTM F899. After proper stress relieving, the Rockwell hardness shall be Rc 44 to Rc 50 when tested in accordance with ASTM E18.
Style, design and dimensions. The retractor shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 22245 for style, design and dimensions.
Finish. The retractors shall have mirror or matte finish and shall be properly passivated.
Corrosion resistance. The retractors shall show no evidence of corrosion or plating of copper when tested in accordance with ASTM Designation F1089.
