COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
RETRACTOR, GOITER (Beckman)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a goiter retractor of the Beckman design suitable for use in surgery of the thyroid gland.
Salient characteristics:
General. The retractor shall have 4 x 4 sharp prongs and be approximately 12 inches long. The hinged arms shall be capable of 180 degree motion. The ratchet pawl shall be either of the shielded or open type.
Material. Material of the retractor shall be Class 4 corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with ASTM Designation F899.
Hardness. The retractor shall have a Rockwell Hardness C scale (HRC) of 40 to 47 when tested in accordance with ASTM Designation E18 or E92 whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation E140.
Style, design and dimensions. The retractor shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 20351 for style, design and dimensions.
Finish. The retractor shall have a mirror, satin, or matte finish. The matte finish shall exhibit a uniform nondirectional surface texture equivalent to that produced by light blasting the prepared surface with fine abrasive under pressure.
Passivation. The retractor shall be properly passivated.
Corrosion resistance. The retractor shall show no evidence of corrosion or plating of copper when tested in accordance with ASTM Designation F1089.
