COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
RETRACTOR, LAMINECTOMY (Meyerding)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers laminectomy retractors of the Meyerding style suitable for use in retracting muscle tissue during orthopedic and neurosurgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
General. The retractor shall be Type I- 2 inch by 5/8 inch wide blade, Type II- 3 inch by 1 inch blade, or Type III- 3- 1/2 wide blade. The retractor may be either one or two-piece construction. If two piece construction, the blade shall be securely attached to a handle which may be either hollow or solid. The blade shall have evenly-spaced uniform teeth on its distal edge which are curved inward. The proximal end of the handle shall be curved in the same direction the blade is curved.
Material. Material of the blade shall be Class 4 martensitic steel in accordance with ASRM Designation F899. The handle may be either Class 4 or Class 3 austenitic stainless steel.
Hardness. The retractor shall have a Rockwell Hardness C scale (HRC) of 40 to 47 when tested in accordance with ASTM Designation E18 or E92 whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation E140.
Style, design and dimensions. The retractor shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 23447 for style, design and dimensions.
Finish. The retractor shall have a mirror, satin, or matte finish. The matte finish shall exhibit a uniform nondirectional surface texture equivalent to that produced by light blasting the prepared surface with fine abrasive under pressure.
