COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CHISEL, BONE, FREER, STRAIGHT, 3/16 INCH
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-C-36743 which is cancelled.
This Commercial Item Description covers a straight bone chisel, of the Freer design, used in nasal surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
General. Shall be a straight bone chisel that is 6-1/4 inches in length, of the Freer design and used in nasal surgical procedures to cut nasal bone.
Material. The bone chisel shall be fabricated of Class 4, Type 4, martensitic corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with ASTM F899.
Hardness. The chisel shall have a Rockwell Hardness C50 to C55 when tested in accordance with ASTM E18 or E92, whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM E140.
Style, design and dimensions. The chisel shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 20492 for style, design and dimensions.
Finish. The chisel shall have a mirror or mirror and satin finish.
Passivation. The chisel shall be properly passivated.
Resistance to Corrosion. The chisel shall show no sign of corrosion when tested in accordance with ASTM F1089.
Identification marking and labeling. The chisel shall be legibly marked with the contractor’s name or registered trademark and the word “stainless”. Foreign manufactured chisels shall bear the name of the country of origin.
