MASK, SURGICAL

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This Commercial Item Description covers a disposable, pleated, nonwoven fabric, surgical mask suitable for use by medical personnel in operating rooms to provide aseptic protection.
Salient characteristics:
The mask shall consist of a filter mat encased and bonded in two soft layers of nonwoven fabric. The filter media shall consist of a filter mat composed of polypropylene fibers. The outside facing material shall be a nonwoven fabric of suitable fibers. The mark shall have a minimum of three 1/2 inch pleats along its horizontal width to allow for a snug fit at the edges and without binding at the nose or mouth. The peripheral margins of the mask shall be bound with nonwoven tape by means of stitching, welding or gluing. The tape along the horizontal margins shall be extended to serve as tie tapes. The four tie tapes shall be a minimum of 15 inches long from the edge. A nosepiece shall be encased within the facing material and centered along the top horizontal edge of the mask. The nosepiece shall be fabricated from a single strip of malleable aluminum rounded on both ends. The strip shall be flexible enough to be readily bent to the contour of the nose and hold the mask snugly against the face to prevent fogging of spectacles. The color of the mask shall be blue, green or other pastel shades.
