INTERIM COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BLADE, SURGICAL KNIFE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Interim Commercial Item Description which was developed by the Defense Personnel Support Center, Directorate of Medical Material, DPSC-RST, 2800 South 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19101, based upon currently available technical information.
This interim commercial item description covers a surgical knife blade of the Beaver-Okamura design suitable for ophthalmic surgery.
Salient characteristics:
The blades shall be of the Beaver-Okamura design, commercial designation number 57, and shall comply with Figure 1. The blades shall be fabricated of a suitable martensitic corrosion-resistant steel, type 440 or similar, in accordance with ASTM F899. The blades shall be properly hardened and tempered. The hardness of the blades shall be between RC 55 and 65 when tested according to the blade and hardness test.
The blades shall be of one piece construction and their tangs shall fit securely onto 3H and 3K blade handles. The blades shall be interchangeable with all blades and handles of the same size. The blades shall have sufficient stiffness not to deflect sideways beyond the torque limits under conditions of normal use.
The blade cutting edge shall be uniform, well defined and sharp. The blade edge shall be smooth and free of any nicks, burrs, jags, pits, grind marks, signs of corrosion, or any other defects.
The blades shall be sterile and free from pyrogens. The blades shall have a minimum SAL of 0.0001. Each blades shall be individually packaged. The packaging shall be designed so that the blades permit ready dispensing by sterile technique.
