INTERIM COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
INFUSION SET, SCALP VEIN, 25 Gage
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this interim commercial item description which was developed by the Defense Personnel Support Center, Directorate of Medical Materiel, DPSC-RST, 2800 South 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19101, based upon currently available technical information.
This interim commercial item description covers a single type of pediatric scalp vein infusion set used in administering medication.
Salient characteristics:
Materials: The cannulae shall be made of Type 304 stainless steel in accordance with ASTM F899. The tubing shall be made of plasticized polyvinyl chloride and conform to Class IV Plastic requirements of the USP. The tubing shall be clear or clear with a frosted surface. The wings shall be plasticized polyvinylchloride. The hub shall be made of polyvinylchloride, polypropylene or nylon. The protective cap on the hub shall be made of polyethylene or polypropylene. The needle shall be protected with a polyethylene sleeve or cap.
Construction. The needle shall be a 25 gage thin wall needle 3/8 inch long. The bore of the needle shall be 0.0110 to 0.0130 inch. The tubing length shall be 3-1/2 inches and have an ID of 0.040 inch. The tubing volume shall be 0.17 ± 0.03 ml. The set shall have two wings permanently attached to the proximal end of the needle. The wing spread shall be 1-1/8 inches by 3/8 inch by 0.040 inch thick. Tolerances unless otherwise stated are ± 10%. The hub shall have a Luer taper in accordance with ANSI/HIMA-MD70.1. The set with the needle stoppered by putting the tip into a piece of rubber shall withstand 20 psig air pressure for one minute without leakage of air. This test shall be conducted with the hub attached to a Luer fitting having a lumen for the air entrance. The entire set shall be submerged in water during the test.
