COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
TRACHEOSTOMY KIT, EMERGENCY, Sterile
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers sterile, disposable, emergency tracheostomy kit, suitable for performing emergency tracheostomies due to larynospasm, trauma to the neck or destruction, collapse or blockage of the airway.
Salient characteristics:
General. The tracheostomy kit shall consist of a disposable syringe with a male Luer slip tip and cannula lancet needle with an integral throat plate and a female Luer slip hub.
Characteristics: The cannula tube shall be 8 gauge by 1-1/2 plus or minus 0.10 inches with the distal end 7/8 plus 0 minus 0.062 inches long and curved at a 30 plus or minus 5o angle to the hub. The cannula tube shall have an I.D. of 0.135 plus or minus 0.005 inches. The leacing edge of the cannula tube shall be sharpened to form a point. In addition, the back edge of the point shall be sharpened starting one-half diameter from the edge. The cannula shall be in accordance with Figure 1.
A throat plate that limits the needle penetration shall be provided. The throat plate shall be 1.25 plus or minus 0.1 inches long, (.50 plus or minus 0.05 inches wide and 0.020 plus or minus 0.002 inches thick. Each throat plate shall have one slot at each end suitable for the attachment of a 36 inch polyester tie. The tie shall hold the needle in place or the patient. A 10 cc syringe shall be part of the kit.
Luer fittings. Both the male and female Luer fittings shall meet the dimensional requirements of ANSI MD 70.1. The tracheostomy kit shall meet the performance test requirements for Luer slip fittings of ANSI MD 70.1.
Materials. The cannula tube shall be fabricated from type 304 austentic corrosion-resistant steel. The throat plate and hub shall be fabricated from corrosion resistant metallic alloy. The disposable syringe shall be fabricated from plastic suitable for the intended use.
Sterility. Each tracheostomy kit shall be sterilized in accordance with the USP.
Instructions. An instruction kit shall detailing the proper use of the tracheostomy kit shall be provided with each kit.
Workmanship. The tracheostomy kit shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
Unit. Package (PG). One package containing ten tracheostomy kits, as specified constitutes one unit. The tracheostomy kits shall be individually packaged sterile in a peel-open type container capable of maintaining sterility of contents unless package is damaged or opened.
