CANNULA, BRAIN, Haynes, 13 Gage
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers one size of brain cannulae of the Haynes design suitable for use in neurosurgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
Style and design. The instrument shall be of the Haynes design with a 13 gage cannula. The distal tip of the cannula shall be closed and rounded to form a blunt tip. The cannula shall be graduated in one centimeter (cm) increments from the distal tip to a working length of 10 cm. The cannula shall have three oval openings spaced 120O apart. The openings shall be located 0.355, 0.684, and 1.010 cm ± 0.025 cm respectively from the distal tip. The cross sectional area of each opening shall be equal to or greater than the cross-sectional area of the cannula lumen. The proximal end of the instrument shall be a permanently attached Luer lock connector. The Luer lock connector shall meet the dimensional and performance requirements of American National Standards Institute/Health Industry Manufacturer’s Association (ANSI/HIMA) Standard MD70.1.
Material. The instrument shall be manufactured from Class 3 austenitic corrosion resisting steel as specified in American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard F899.
Passivation. Instruments shall be properly passivated.
Finish. The instrument shall have a mirror or stain finish.
Boil test. The instrument shall show no signs of corrosion when subjected to the following boil test. The instrument shall be thoroughly scrubbed with soap and water, then rinsed with distilled water and dried. The instrument shall then be boiled for 30 minutes in a glass beaker of distilled water. After boiling, the instrument shall remain submerged for another 24 hours. At the end of 24 hours, the instrument shall be inspected for signs of corrosion.
