TUBING, SURGICAL (pLASTIC)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers plastic tubing suitable for use with surgical suction apparatus.
Salient characteristics:
Material. The tubing shall be fabricated from flexible Polyvinyl Chlorride (PVC). This material shall comply with the physical and biological requirements listed below.
Physical/Biological properties:
Hardness. The tubing shall have a Snore Hardness of A50 to A100 when tested in accordance with ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) D2240.
Tensile strength. The tubing shall have a tensile strength of 1000 to 3500 psi and an ultimate elongation of 200 to 450 percent when tested in accordance with ASTM D638.
Water absorption. The tubing 24-hour water absorption shall not exceed 1.0% of its own weight when tested as specified in ASTM D570.
Toxicity. The plastic shall be non-toxic when subjected to Class VI testing in accordance with the “Systemic Injection Test” listed in the latest edition of the USP under “Biological Tests-Plastics.”
Style and design. The tubing shall be non-sterile, non-conductive, and disposable. The tube shall not rupture or split when tested in accordance with ASTM D 1599. Minimum failure pressure shall be 51 psig.
