COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BONE PLATE, BROAD, ORTHOPEDIC IMPLANT,
SELF-COMPRESSING HOLES
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers broad bone plates with self-compressing holes suitable for surgical procedures of the femur or humerus.
Salient characteristics:
Characteristics. Bone plates shall be 16 mm wide and 4.8 mm thick. Plates shall have slightly curved profiles. Plate holes shall be capable of accepting large spherical headed bone screws. Holes shall be self-compressing. End holes shall be slotted on the underside of the plate to accept a compression device.
Holes shall not have same axial centerline. Shall be two axial centerlines on which holes shall be staggered alternately. The two axial centerlines shall run parallel to, and be equidistant from, the centerline which bisects the plate longitudinally. As an alternate design, end holes may be centered on the plates longitudinal bisector.
Distance between holes shall be 16 mm. Distance between two centermost holes shall be 24.0 ± 1.25 mm.
Tolerances shall be as follows: width ± .5 mm, length ± 2.0 mm, thickness ± .2 mm, distance between holes ± .25 mm.
Material. Bone plates shall be cold-rolled conforming to the composition specified in ASTM F139, Grade 2. Grain size of raw material shall be five or finer.
Surface preparation. Description of surface characteristics and methods of surface preparation shall be in accordance with ASTM F86.
