ARCH SUPPORTS
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to A-A-0051639 (DM), dated 19 Sep 1986.
This commercial item description covers one type of lightweight orthotic arch support for patients experiencing discomfort and pain associated with stress to the anatomical structures of the foot caused by standing, walking, running and various athletic maneuvers.
Salient characteristics:
The arch supports shall be constructed with a lower layer of closed cell ethylene foam and an upper layer of vinyl backed cloth. The supports shall mold to the foot and shall be suitable for use by patients with high arched, normal arched or flat feet. The supports shall limit pronation of flat feet and shall facilitate pronation of high arched feet. The supports shall be constructed to provide varus wedge in the range of 2 to 7 degrees. This varus wedge is started at the very back of the heel and is gradually increased toward the forefoot area so that there is a maximum amount of wedging under the second metatarsal head which includes a rearfoot wedging and an additional forefoot wedge of from 1 to 10 degrees and preferably from 3 to 10 degrees. The wedge drops off abruptly under the first metatarsal head to a level that forms a neutral plane or valgus (lateral) wedge on a plane from the first metatarsal head to the fifth metatarsal head with the rearfoot. The arch supports shall fit men’s shoes sizes 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12. They shall be suitable for both street and athletic shoes.
Workmanship. The arch supports shall be free from defects which detract from their appearance or impair its serviceability.
Unit. Pair (PR). One pair consisting of one, left and one right arch support, as specified, constitutes one unit.
Sampling for tests. Sampling for tests shall be conducted in accordance with MIL-STD-105 and as specified herein. The nit of product for test purposes shall be one (1) pair.
