TUBE, TRACHEOSTOMY, DISPOSABLE
(Low Pressure Cuff, Shiley)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers sterile, disposable, soft, plastic, low pressure cuff tracheostomy tube, Shiley style, suitable for long term ventilation of tracheostomy patients who do not require high ventilation pressures.
Salient Characteristics:
General. The tube shall be either Type I or II. The Type I tracheostomy tube shall consist of an outer cannula with a cuff connected by tubing to a pilot balloon, an inner cannula and an obturator. The Type II tube shall be of Type I construction except being equipped with a pressure regulating valve.
Material. The outer cannula shall be fabricated of semi-rigid polyvinylchloride with the cuff, tubing and pilot balloon fabricated from polyvinylchloride. The inner cannula shall be fabricated from polypropylene and the obturator and flange from polycarbonate. All material shall be medical grade.
Outer cannula. The outer cannula shall have a soft, thin walled, high volume, low pressure cuff that uniformly distributes pressure against the tracheal wall. The cannula shall have a one-way Luer valve pressure retention system and a swivel neck for comfort and conformity to neck anatomy with the size clearly imprinted on the front outer of the neck plate. The outer cannula shall be radiopaque. The cuff shall be inflated through plastic tubing connected to a pilot balloon containing the one-way Luer valve. The cuff shall be designed to reach tracheal occlusion at internal cuff pressures of less than 25 mm Hg. The cannula shall be suitably curved to allow access to the trachea.
