COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CASE, NEEDLE AND BLADE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers two sizes of sterile plastic cases suitable for the counting and disposal of suture needles and blades in a sterile field.
Salient characteristics:
Sizes. Cases shall be provided in the sizes shown in table I, as specified.

Style and design. The case shall consist of a rigid puncture-proof container with a ridged foam insert. The container shall be of the dimensions shown in Table I for the size specified. The container shall be hinged and shall have a snap-lock closure. The foam insert shall have a-minimum of two tabs which protrude 0.4-0.6 cm outside of the container on the snap-lock side and shall be hinged. The insert shall have 2-3 ridges 0.6-0.8 cm high on each side. The insert shall have parallel lines printed perpendicular to the ridges. Each needle insertion site, formed by the intersection of a line with a ridge, shall be numbered. There shall be 15 sites on each side of the size 1 insert and 30 sites on each side of the size 2 insert. The insert shall have a magnetic strip permanently attached on each side. The magnetic strips shall be capable of securely holding the number of blades indicated in Table I for the size specified. The strips shall be labeled “Blades.” The container shall have an adhesive strip applied on the bottom side. The adhesive strip may be applied across the width or length of the container. The adhesive strip shall be capable of adhering the container firmly to a metallic surface.
