COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
TONGS, SKULL TRACTION GARDNER-WELLS
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers skull tongs of the Gardner-Wells design suitable for traction and/or immobilization of the cervical spine.
Salient characteristics:
Style and design. The style shall be that of a half circle bar to partially encompass the head. One end of the bar shall have a spring loaded point for insertion into the skull. Screws shall have sharp needle points. The points shall have a small diameter hollow rod for protection, and in their maximum open position shall be 6-1/4 inches (16 cm). The design and dimensions shall comply with Figure 1.
Securely attached to the bar shall be an S-shaped hook plate for the attachment of weights. The plate shall be legibly marked with instructions for antiseptic wipe of both screws and skull. The plate shall also be marked to tighten the screws until the proper set force exists. The screws shall have a means of locking them in the set position.
Material. The complete instrument shall be manufactured from Class 1 austenitic corrosion-resisting steel as specified in American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Designation F899.
Hardness. The complete instrument shall be properly passivated and have a hardness range of Rockwell (HRB) 75 to 100.
