CATHETER AND NEEDLE UNIT, INTRAVENOUS (20 Gage)

This commercial item description covers catheter-over-needle unit suitable for administering intravenous medication from a single venipuncture.
Salient characteristics:
This catheter-over-needle unit consist of a 23 gage by 1-3/4-inch hypodermic needle, a flash chamber and plug.
The 20 gage by 1-1/4 inch catheter shall be made of radiopaque fluorinated ethylene propylene plastic and it and all parts of the fluid path shall comply with USP Class IV plastic requirements for biocompatibility. The catheter hub shall be made of polypropylene, nylon or polybutylterephalate. The hypodermic needle shall be made of Type 304, stainless steel in accordance with ASTM F899 and have a transparent flash chamber made of Tenite propionate or other clear suitable plastic.
The catheter hub shall conform to Luer requirements of ANSI/HIMA MD70.1 for inside dimensions and the locking lugs. The catheter at its leading edge shall be smooth and precisely fitted to the OD of the needle and tapered to minimize patient trauma. The exterior of the cannula of the needle shall be coated with a silicone lubricant which is inert, non-toxic and suitable for intravenous use.
The bevel of the needle shall be ground flat or concave and have a secondary grind near the tip to enhance cutting action and create a reinforcing ridge at the extreme tip of the bevel. All edges of the bevel shall be sharp except the heel which shall be dull to prevent coring. The bevel shall be 0.078 inch ± 10% long.
There shall be no burrs, chips or foreign matter present in or on the needle or catheter.
