COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
FORCEPS, EAR (Strut, House)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-F-42032 (DM), dated 30 October 1986, which is cancelled.
This commercial item description covers one size of strut implantation forceps of the House design for use in microscopic surgery of the ear.
Salient characteristics.
Material. Forceps shall be manufactured from class 4 martensitic corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard F899.
Hardness. The forceps tips shall have a Rockwell hardness of C48 to C53. Forceps tips shall not vary in hardness by more than five points.
Style and design. Forceps shall be of the dimensions and design of DPSC Drawing 24487. The top level arm shall be capable of disengaging from the lever pivot for raising and cleaning. The pivot mechanism and lever guide shall operate smoothly, freely and without binding. The pivot mechanisms shall be sufficiently tight to ensure correct alignment of the tips with no free-play or overlap of the tips. The tip mating surfaces shall mate cleanly with no discernable gap at any point of the surfaces.
Passivation. The forceps shall be properly passivated.
Finish. The finish shall be satin. The finish shall be uniform and free from burrs, scale, rough areas, sharp edges, and grind or tool marks.
Markings. Forceps shall be permanently and legibly marked with the manufacturer’s name or registered trademark and the word “stainless.” In addition, forceps of foreign manufacture shall bear the name of the country of manufacture.
