COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
ELEVATOR, EAR (Stapes, Angled)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a stapes elevator of the House design, also known as a Gimmick.
Salient characteristics.
Material. The elevator shall be manufactured from martensitic corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard F899.
Hardness. The tip of finished elevators shall have a Rockwell hardness of HRC 38-45. The shank of the elevator shall be malleable (not hardened).
Style and design. The elevator shall be of the House design, and shall be 6-1/2 ± 1/4 inches in length. The elevator shall have a solid handle of 5/32 inch diameter minimum. The handle shall have longitudinal grooves, knurling, or shall be hexagonally or octagonal shaped, and shall be 3-1/2 to 4-1/4 inches in length. The working end shall be a spatula tip formed at an angle of 15 ± 1° to the axis of the handle. The tip shall be flat on the top (side) opposite 15° angle and round on the bottom. The tip shall be 12 ± 1 millimeters (mm) in length, and 1.0 ± 0.2 mm in width. The tip shall taper from a nominal 1/64 inch thickness at the distal end. The edges of the tip shall be chamfered or rounded, and free from any sharp edges or square corners.
The shank of the instrument shall be round, and shall taper smoothly from the handle to the 15 degree bend.
Passivation. The elevator shall be properly passivated.
