COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
INTRAVENOUS INJECTION SET
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description as replacement for Military Specification MIL-I-37990 (DLA-DM), dated 25 July 1986, which is cancelled.
This commercial item description covers a secondary intravenous injection set suitable for delivery of IV solutions during patient care.
Salient characteristics:
General. The set shall be a non-vented, sterile, disposable, secondary intravenous injection set. The set shall be compatible with all plastic and vented glass IV solution containers, and be capable of attachment to a primary intravenous injection set.
Material. Tubing and drip chamber shall be fabricated of clear polyvinylchloride which meets the USP requirements for Class II plastics. Needle shall be fabricated of type 304 stainless steel in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Designation F899.
Style and design. The set shall have an insertion spike capable of piercing an intravenous fluid container (see note 2), a 15-20 ml tubing, a roller flow-clamp, an intravenous needle and male Luer adapter, removable and protectors, and a suspension hook.
Intravenous needle shall be 18 or 19 gage with Luer hub cavity in accordance with ANSI/HIMA MD70.1. Tubing shall nominally measure 36 inches long and 0.1 inch inner diameter. The suspension hook shall be suitable for lowering the primary intravenous injection set below the level of the secondary level of the secondary set.
The fluid flow to the patient shall be a unique constant rate for each position of the roller within the clamp. The position of the roller in the clamp shall not change when released by the user, nor shall the roller separate from the clamp during typical use.
