COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
RETRACTOR, SURGICAL (Harrington)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers one type of surgical retractor suitable for use during deep abdominal and thoracic surgery.
Salient characteristics:
Style and design. Shall be a large-size, extra-deep surgical retractor. Style and design of the retractor shall conform to Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 24458. The design specified herein shall be classified as the “Harrington” design. The blade-to-handle joint shall not crack or break under a 15 lb tensile load (See Drawing).
Materials. Material requirements for each of the retractor’s components are as follows: The blade shall be fabricated from martensitic corrosion-resisting steel. The handle shall be fabricated from austenitic corrosion-resisting steel. These materials shall conform to ASTM Designation F899. As an alternate, both handle and blade may be fabricated from martensitic corrosion-resisting steel.
Hardness. Retractor components fabricated from Class 4 martensitic stainless steel shall have a Rockwell Hardness C Scale (HRC) of 40 to 47. Retractor components fabricated from Class 3 austenitic stainless steel shall have a Rockwell Hardness B Scale (HRB) of 75 to 100. Each component shall be tested for hardness.
Corrosion-resistance. The retractor shall resist corrosion. The retractor shall be tested in accordance with the Copper-Sulfate Test and Boil Test specified in ASTM Designation F1089. However, the results of the Copper-Sulfate Test shall not apply to a retractor component made of austenitic corrosion-resistant steel.
