COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SAW, BONE CUTTING, WIRE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This commercial item description covers a 20 inch wire bone cutting saw suitable for use in neurosurgery for removing bone plates from the skull.
Salient characteristics:
General. Saw blades shall be comprised of a single wire formed into a continuous helical cutting tooth extending above the surface of the wire and of metal displaced therefore to form a groove below the surface. The tooth shall have two (2) angularly arranged faces, one face shall extend to the bottom of the groove and the other shall extend to the surface of the wire. Saw blade wire shall be 0.031 inch plus or minus 3/16 inch from each end. The outside diameter of the formed blade teeth shall be 0.040 inch plus or minus 0.002 inch. Pitch of helical groove shall be 13 turns per inch and grooves shall be shaped to provide a self-clearing cutting edge which can be used to saw in any direction in a plane perpendicular to the long axis of the blade. The ends of the saw wire shall be formed into loops approximately 1/8 inch in inside diameter and twisted securely so that no sharp ends project.
Material. Material shall be Class 3 corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with ASTM Designation A313.
Hardness. Saw wires shall meet the Mechanical Requirements in ASTM Designation A313.
Finish. Saw wires shall have a mirror or satin finish.
Passivation. Saw wires shall be properly passivated.
