COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
RONGEUR, CURVED, HARTMANN, 7-1/4 Inch
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-R-36778, which is cancelled.
This Commercial Item Description covers one type of a curved rongeur of the Hartmann design, box lock type and double spring.
Salient characteristics:
General. The rongeur shall be suitable for removing small particles of bone during mastoidoctomy.
Material. Material of the rongeur shall be Class 4 corrosion resistant steel in accordance with ASTM F899. As an alternate, the spring shall be class 3 corrosion resisting steel in accordance with ASTM F899.
Hardness. After proper stress relieving, the Rockwell hardness for class 4 shall be C-48 to C-55 (with the exception of the screw or pin and spring), when tested in accordance with ASTM E18 or E92 whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM E140.
Style, design and dimensions. The rongeur shall be in accordance Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 20417 for style, design and dimensions.
Finish. The rongeur shall have a mirror, satin or matte finish. The matte finish shall exhibit a uniform nondirectional surface texture equivalent to that produced by lightly blasting the prepared surface with fine abrasives under pressure.
Passivation. The rongeur shall be properly passivated.
Corrosion resistance. The rongeur shall show no evidence of corrosion or plating of copper when tested in accordance with ASTM 1089.
