COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
FORCEPS, LARYNGEAL (Jackson)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-F-37048, which is cancelled.
This commercial item description covers laryngeal forceps of the Jackson style with either cup-type or alligator grasping type-jaws. The cup-type shall be suitable for use in removing nodules from the vocal cord and the alligator-grasping type shall be suitable for use in grasping and removing objects from the larynx, trachea, and bronchi.
Salient characteristics:
General. The cup-type forceps with straight jaw is Type I, style 1, the cup-type forceps with angular jaw is Type I, style 2 and the alligator-grasping type forceps is Type III. The forceps shall have a 28 cm working length.
Material. Material of the forceps shall be Class 4 corrosion resistant steel in accordance with ASTM Designation F899.
Hardness. The jaws of Type I forceps shall have a Rockwell Hardness C scale (HRC) of 48 to 55. Type II forceps and the rest of Type I forceps (other than the pin or screw) shall have a Rockwell Hardness C scale (HRC) of 40 to 47 when tested in accordance with ASTM Designation E18 or E92 whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation E140.
Style, design and dimensions. The forceps shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 20505 for style, design and dimensions.
Finish. The forceps shall have a mirror, satin or matte finish. The matte finish shall exhibit a uniform nondirectional surface texture equivalent to that produced by lightly blasting the prepared surface with fine abrasives under pressure.
