COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
ELEVATOR, PERIOSTEAL, HAIGHT, 12 INCH
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-E-36962 which is cancelled.
This Commercial Item Description covers one type of periosteal elevator, suitable for use in thoracic surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
General. The elevator shall be double-ended, Cameron Haight design, and shall be suitable for use during thoracic surgery.
Material. Material of the elevator shall be Class 4 corrosion resistant steel for the shanks and blades in accordance with ASTM F899. The handle shall be Class 3 type 304 with chromium contents of 17 percent corrosion resistant steel or Class 4 with carbon content of 0.15 percent maximum and chromium content of 12.0 to 15.0 percent, in accordance with ASTM F899.
Hardness. The elevator shall have a Rockwell Hardness C scale (HRC) of 40 to 53 minimum for Class 4 steel and B scale of 79 to 95 for Class 3 steel when tested in accordance with ASTM E18 or E92 whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM E140.
Style, design and dimensions. The elevator shall have a hollow handle, to which shall be securely attached by silver soldering and chromium over nickel plated. Alternate handle shall be hollow, to which shanks shall be welded, using appropriate stainless steel welding process, and followed by appropriate heat treatment. The instrument shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 20289 for style, design and dimensions.
