COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
HOLDER, SUTURE NEEDLE (4-5/8 INCH, TROUTMAN)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a 4-5/8 inch long suture needle holder, of the Troutman design, suitable for use in microsurgery.
Salient Characteristics:
General. The suture needle holder shall have delicate jaws. The jaws shall be curved, flattened and shall have a wide flat handle and a lock.
Material. The suture needle holder shall be fabricated from Class 4 martensitic steel in accordance with ASTM Designation F899.
Style, design and dimensions. The suture needle holder shall be 4-5/8 inches long with serrated handles to limit slippage. The jaws faces shall not be serrated. When closed, there shall be no protruding points. The jaws shall close, tips first, before locking. The suture needle holder shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing 23405.
Hardness. The suture needle holder shall have a Rockwell Hardness C scale (HRC) of 40 to 47 in accordance with ASTM Designation E18 or E92 whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation E140.
Finish. The suture needle holder shall have a mirror and satin finish.
Passivation. The finished instrument shall be properly passivated in accordance with ASTM Designation F1026.
Corrosion resistance. The suture needle holder shall show no signs of corrosion or plating in accordance with ASTM Designation F1089.
