COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SPECULUM, VAGINAL (Graves)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description as a replacement for Federal Specification GG-S-604, which is cancelled.
This commercial item description covers vaginal specula of the Graves design suitable for use in gynecological examination and procedures.
Salient characteristics:
General. Specula shall have a 3-1/2 inch blade length for size 1, 4 inches for size 2 and 5 inches for size 3. The hinge mechanism shall be a rivet and washer type. As an alternate, an integral movement strap may be used.
Material. The material of the specula shall be Class 3 type 302, 303 or 304 austenitic stainless steel, Class 4 type 410, 416 or 410X martensitic stainless steel, or Class 6 type 430 ferritic stainless steel in accordance with ASTM Designation F899.
Style, design and dimensions. The specula shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 20095 for style, design and dimensions.
Hardness. The specula shall have a Rockwell Hardness B Scale (HRB) of 75 to 100 when fabricated from Class 3 steel, HRC 38 to 46 when fabricated from Class 4 steel, and HRC 25 to 30 when fabricated of Class 6 steel. Testing is in accordance with ASTM Designation E18 or E92 whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation E140.
Finish. The specula shall have a mirror, satin, or matte finish. The matte finish shall exhibit a uniform nondirectional surface texture equivalent to that produced by lightly blasting the prepared surface with fine abrasives under pressure.
