COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BOLT, TIBIAL
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-T-36772 which is cancelled.
This Commercial Item Description covers a tibial boil used in orthopedic surgery for repair of fractures of the tibia.
Salient characteristics:
General. The tibial bolt shall be suitable for orthopedic surgery involving fractures of the human tibia.
Material. The tibial bolt shall be fabricated from cold drawn bar or wire conforming to the composition specified in ASTM F138 for Grade 2.
Grain size and microcleanliness of the material shall be in accordance with ASTM F138.
Hardness. The Rockwell Hardness of all components of the bolt shall be C30 to C35 when tested in accordance with ASTM E18 or E92 whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM E140.
Style, design and dimensions. The tibial bolt shall be furnished with two mating nuts and two mating washers. The bolt proper shall be of one piece construction. As an alternate, the head of the bolt shall be heliarc welded to the thread member; swaging or other cold working operations shall not be acceptable. The bolt head shall possess a slot, and the distal end of the bolt shall possess a sharp point. The threads of the bolt shall be in accordance with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standard B1.1 for 3-48 UNC-2A (Unified Screw Thread System of Dimensions).
