COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
FORCEPS, TOWEL, BACKHAUS
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-F-42019 and Federal Specification GG-F-620 which are cancelled.
This Commercial Item Description covers two sizes of forceps used for clamping towels to skin during surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
General. The forceps shall be of the Backhaus design and of the following sizes and lengths:

Material. The forceps shall be fabricated from class 4, type 420 martensitic corrosion resistant steel in accordance with ASTM F899.
Hardness. The forceps shall have a Rockwell Hardness (HRC) scale of 40 to 45 when tested in accordance with ASTM E18 or E92, whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM E140.
Style, design and dimensions. The forceps shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 20230 for style, design and dimensions.
Finish. The forceps shall have a mirror, satin or matte finish.
Passivation. The forceps shall be properly passivated.
Corrosion resistance. The forceps shall show no signs of corrosion or plating of copper when tested in accordance with ASTM F1089.
