COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
MASK, SURGICAL
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Federal Specification DDD-M-136b which is cancelled.
This Commercial Item Description covers surgical masks used by personnel in operating rooms and by other personnel in maintaining protective aseptic techniques.
Salient characteristics:
The surgical masks shall consist of single-ply filter fabric such as canton flannel or double-nap outing flannel, covered on each side with a single ply of gauze, neatly sewn along all edges so that no raw edges or loose threads are exposed. Two tucks shall be sewn into each of the two sides reducing the length by approximately one half. There shall be no less than 16 stitches per inch. Gauze shall be made from thoroughly clean cotton, free from waste. The gauze shall be bleached, shall be free from loading matter, and shall be substantially free from particles other than cotton.
There shall be two 1/2 inch wide tie tabs of cotton tape securely sewn across the outside top and bottom of the mask approximately 1/8 inch from the edges of the mask and extending beyond the edges of the mask for a distance of not less than 14 inches. The tapes shall be double sewn parallel to and approximately 1/8 inch from each edge of the tape, and the sewing shall extend not less than 1-1/2 inches beyond the edges of the mask. There shall be not less than eight stitches per inch.
All stitching used in the construction of the mask shall be of the lock stitch type.
Thread used in the manufacturing of the surgical mask shall be cotton machine thread 3-ply or heavier, ticket number 50.
