COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CANE, WALKING (Wood)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification LLL-C-83B.
This commercial item description outlines a cane for use by the sick and injured, as an aid in ambulation.
Salient characteristics: Cane, Walking (Wood), plain tip, curved handle and handle shall be integral with the shaft, straight grain hardwood, 36 inches (or approx. 90 cm) long, 1 inch - 1/8 inch (or approx. 2.5-cm - .32 cm) diameter. Inside perpendicular dimensions at bottom of curved handle to upright must provide opening at least 3-1/4 inches (or approx. 8.12 cm) to fit average adult male patient. Cane shall be free to cracks and splinters.
Type I - End tapered to fit a rubber cane tip 3/4 inch (or approx. 1.87 cm) diameter by 1-1/4 inch (or approx. 4.37 cm) inside depth; hardwood from white ash, cherry, rock elm, hickory, red oak or hard maple, clear varnish or lacquer finish, J inch (or approx. 2.54 cm) diameter.
Moisture content of the canes shall not exceed 15% based on oven dry weight.
Type II - Flat end, (not tapered); cane to be dark in color such as walnut, or rosewood, polyurethane coated.
Contractor certification: The contractor shall certify that the product offered meets the salient characteristics of this description, and conforms to the producer’s own drawings, specifications, standards and quality assurance practices. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to first delivery and thereafter as may be otherwise provided for under the provisions of the contract.
Regulatory requirements
Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act - If the product covered by this document has been determined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to be under its jurisdiction, the offeror/contractor shall comply, and be responsible for compliance by its subcontractors/suppliers, with the requirements of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, as amended, and regulations promulgated thereunder. In addition, the offeror/contractor shall comply, and be responsible for compliance by its subcontractors/suppliers, with the requirements of all other applicable Federal, State, and local statutes, ordinances, and regulations.
Recovered materials - The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered material in accordance with Public Law 94-580 to the maximum extent practical.
