RAZOR, SURGICAL PREPARATION, Safety, Disposable
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description describes a double-edged, disposable, safety razor with a coated stainless steel blade suitable for use in surgical preparation.
Salient characteristics:
Classification. The surgical preparation razor shall be of the following types:
Type I – Sterile
Type II – Nonsterile
The safety razor shall consist of a handle, a double-edged blade and a protective cover, assembled to provide a functional disposable razor with a protective shield. Type I razor shall be sterile and packaged to insure sterility.
Materials.
Razor (without blade). The razor shall be fabricated Of polystyrene, polypropylene, or styrene-butadiene, with a minimum average tensile strength of 3000 pounds per square inch (p.s.i.), when tested as specified in ASTM D638, and a minimum Izod impact strength of 0.45 foot pound force per inch (ft. lbf./in.) of notch 23 centrigrade, when tested as specified in ASTM D256. As an alternate, razor handle and blade seat shall be fabricated of styrene-butadiene molding and extrusion material, and the blade cover shall be fabricated of polystyrene.
Blade. The cutting blade shall be fabricated from corrosion-resisting steel containing 0.90 to 1.05 percent carbon, 0.15 to 0.25 percent silicon, 0.90 to 1.10 percent manganese, 12.0 to 14.0 percent chromium, and maximums of 0.040 percept phosphorus and 0.040 percent sulfur. As an alternate, the corrosion-resisting steel shall contain 0.53 to 0,70 percent carbon, 0.15 to 0.50 percent silicon, 0.20 to 0.80 percent manganese, 12.0 to 14.70 percent chromium, and maximums of 0.030 percent phosphorus and 0.025 percent sulfur. The beveled edge shall be treated with a fluorocarbon-telomer coating such as polytetrafluoroethylene or shall have a fine silicon fluid coating.
